When cooking with this pot I usually fill it so that there is a gap of 5cm between the food and the lip of the pot. The quantity of food this cooks for is definitely enough for 5 adult size portions of stew or soup. Of course if you are cooking something that maybe accompanied with rice, potatoes or bread this means the quantity you cooked will be enough to cool and freeze half.
The removable pot
I love that this slow cooker enables you to sauté (fry briefly) the meat or vegetables on the hob using the removable ceramic dish which cuts down on time and washing-up. It is also great if you want to ensure you are capturing all of the juices from the meat. I cannot vouch for how it works in a microwave (are there microwaves big enough?) or the freezer. However I have used it on top of the cooker with a low gas flame, in the fridge and in the dishwasher. All without any problem.
Unfortunately you cannot see through the lid of this pot and from a design point of view I can understand why as it looks much more traditional and pot like with its domed, ceramic lid. It is however a little bit of a disadvantage as you can’t see how the cooking is going and when you lift the lid to look you are letting all that valuable built up temperature out. With this said it isn’t a huge problem. When we used to be out all day working I wasn’t around to peak and prod the food so a glass lid would have been pointless. Once home I would lift the lid and give a stir and a taste but by that time the food is cooked so it doesn’t matter.
It isn’t a really cheap slow cooker (around £60) however, unlike some of the cheaper ones, you are getting the ceramic pot that you can take out and actually cook on the hob with or in the oven with no need for any other cooking pots/frying pans.
My overall opinion
In my opinion the crock-pot sauté slow cooker is a really attractive slow cooker. Which I am very happy to have sitting on my worktop at home and would recommend to friends. It definitely fulfils the requirements of a slow cooker by producing good flavoursome food, cooked until tender, at a low temperature. Moreover the added feature of being able to remove the pot and sauté, bake, freeze, chill or microwave it is very appealing.
