This review has been written by Leoni-Fay Bunting. She regularly cooks her family’s dinners in a slow cooker and has been using them for four and a half years. She recently bought a Morphy Richards 460004 Accents Slow Cooker and shares her thoughts about the appliance:
When my slow cooker broke a few months ago I was devastated! The slow cooker has to be the second most used appliance in my kitchen (the first being my mixer!) By pure coincidence the Morphy Richards 460004 Accents Slow Cooker came up on an Amazon Lightening deal and I just bought it, I needed one and it seemed too good a deal to pass up on.
At first glance it’s everything that you need in a slow cooker, it’s small, lightweight, easy to move and looks stylish so would blend into anyone’s kitchen. There are 3 different modes (warm, low and high), a digital display that counts down, it beeps when the food is done and automatically moves the cooking mode onto warm. The pan is lightweight and dishwasher safe. I loved this one because you cansear the meat on the hob in the pan. It’s not as heavy as my last one and, unlike my last one, won’t smash if you drop it! It’s so easy to use it is just a case of pressing one button to set the mode and the start button. It comes with pre-set timings so you don’t even have to think about it! On the surface it seems like the perfect slow cooker.
However on closer inspection, I have a few issues with the pre-set timers. While you can increase them (slightly) you can’t decrease them. For example you have to cook on high for at least 4 hours, there is no option to decrease that time. My favourite slow cooker recipe book talks about adding ingredients and cooking on high for the last 30 minutes, however with this model, this isn’t actually possible. You can do it manually, set the cooker to high, set your own timer and come back and switch it to warm or off and serve up, but in all honesty its not very practical if you wanted to switch it to high and nip out for an hour or two and come back to a delicious meal being kept warm.
Like most cookers, after your meal has finished cooking, the cooker switches to the warm function to keep it warm. Unlike others I have come across there is a 2 hour limit to the automatic warming function. Again it’s not very practical if you put your meal in at 8am, set it to 7 hours cooking and were planning on coming back at 6pm, The meal would be cold and not very apitizing when you got home. There is no way to increase the automatic warming function.
On balance it’s a very nice little machine and on Amazon reviews scores a 4.6 out of 5. It’s perfect if you are just entering into the world of slow cookers and it’s great for families who want to throw it all in and come back to a readymade meal. It’s not great for people who want to be a little more adventurous with ingredients, add rice to soak up some of the liquid or chickpeas, pasta, even potatoes that you wanted to throw in at the last minute to bulk up the meal. With this machine using my slow cooker some days feels like a chore as I feel like I am thinking and worrying about how long is left the whole day. This is also something that is reflected in some of the Amazon reviews.
There are many benefits to the Morphy Richards 460004 and for many people it would be the prefect machine, unfortunately it’s not the machine for me and my family.
